Clustering is an advanced course focusing on the high availability services of the JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS), including JGroups, JBoss Cache, load balancing, and more. This course fills a four-day specialty training credit for the Middleware Track, and may be applied to the required number of training days for Certified JEMS Middleware Expert and Certified JEMS Master Architect levels.

Description

Clustering is a 4-day training focusing on high availability services of JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS). You will learn how JBoss Application Server leverages JGroups and JBoss Cache for replication and fail-over, how to configure, tune and implement JGroups protocol stacks, how to leverage JBoss Cache in your own middleware application implementation and how to use and configure mod_jk for HTTP load balancing. We will also cover in some detail JBoss Application Server high availability services such as HA-JNDI, HA-JMS and HA-singleton.

Course Format The format is 60% theory, 40% labs.

Prerequisites
Completion of the JBoss for Advanced J2EE Developers course is strongly recommended before taking this course. It is also strongly recommended that the student has at minimum 18 month practical development experience using J2EE and other Java middleware technologies, and it is suggested that the student have some practical experience with JBoss Application Server. Solid Java programming experience (minimum 3 years) is required and understanding of basic TCP/IP topics is necessary.

The student must have the following skills:

  • JTA, Transactions, Java concurrency
  • EJB 2.1, JMS, reliable messaging technologies
  • Previous experience with Apache httpd and some exposure to mod_jk and/or mod_proxy
  • Familiar with JBoss AS microkernel and JMX
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP, UDP, Multicasting

Hardware Requirements

Computer with the following configuration:

  1. A CD/DVD player (CDs will be provided containing application server, JKD software and training labs)
  2. A minimum of 1GHz CPU with 128MB RAM. A 1.3GHz CPU with 512MB RAM is recommended for IDE users
  3. Linux, MAC OS, or Windows 2000/Windows XP. Windows 95/98 is NOT supported.
  4. Optional: Your favorite IDE (Integrated Development Environment) loaded. The instructor will support a command prompt (shell) environment. If an IDE is used, student is responsible for its proper configuration for the labs.
  5. The JDK 1.4.2_0x or JDK 1.5 (will be provided by instructor on CD if not installed before class.)
  6. JBoss 4.0.1SP1 (will be provided by the instructor if not installed before class).
  7. Additional JEMS components, if required, will be provided by the instructor.
